The Adorable Succulent with “Windowed” Tips

Meet the delightful ‘Baby Toes’ succulent! Native to Namibia and South Africa, this unique plant earns its name from its fleshy, upright leaves that resemble tiny, plump toes peeking out of the soil. Its most fascinating feature is the translucent, window-like tips (fenestrations) at the top of each “toe,” which allow sunlight to filter into the buried part of the leaf for photosynthesis. This charming, low-growing succulent is perfect for small pots, windowsills, or as part of a succulent garden.

Care and Maintenance

Baby Toes is a highly specialized plant that requires slightly different care than typical succulents to thrive. Following these instructions is key to preventing overwatering and root rot.

Light
Bright, direct light is essential. Place it on a south-facing window or a very bright east/west window where it receives several hours of direct sun daily. Insufficient light will cause the “toes” to stretch and turn pale.

Watering
The most critical factor. Water deeply, but only when the “toes” begin to look slightly wrinkled or deflated (soft to the touch). In the winter, watering should be extremely sparse, often once a month or less. Never water if the leaves are firm.

Soil
Requires extremely well-draining soil. Use a specialized cactus/succulent mix amended with extra pumice, perlite, or grit (up to 50% drainage material).

Temperature
Prefers warm conditions (65°F – 80°F). Protect it from frost and cold drafts.

Dormancy
Typically goes dormant in summer heat. Reduce watering significantly during the hottest months and resume when temperatures drop.

Fertilizer
Feed once in the spring (during active growth) with a heavily diluted (1/4 strength) balanced liquid fertilizer specifically formulated for cacti/succulents.
