The stunning ‘Peacock Plant’ known for its translucent, painted leaf patterns and dramatic leaf movements (praying). High-humidity care tips and toxicity details are in the full description below.

The Calathea Makoyana, often affectionately called the Peacock Plant, is prized for its intricate, hand-painted patterns. The leaves display stunning dark green markings on a light green background, with a vibrant purple-red underside that becomes translucent when backlit. As a member of the Prayer Plant family, its leaves exhibit nyctinasty, meaning they stand upright at night (like hands praying) and lower during the day.

Lighting
Bright Indirect Light is essential. Too much direct sun will fade the leaf patterns and can scorch the delicate edges. Low light will cause the patterns to dull and the plant to lose vigor.

Watering
Keep consistently moist, but never soggy. The soil should never be allowed to dry out completely. More importantly, Calatheas are highly sensitive to mineral buildup; always use distilled, filtered, or rainwater to prevent brown leaf tips.

Humidity
High Humidity (60%+). This is the most crucial care factor. If humidity drops too low, the leaf edges will curl and turn brown. Use a nearby humidifier or place it on a pebble tray. Misting is generally ineffective.

Soil
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix such as a standard houseplant soil amended with additional perlite and orchid bark to retain some moisture without becoming compacted.

Pet Friendly
NON-TOXIC. This plant is safe for households with cats and dogs.

Fertilizer
Fertilize monthly during the growing season (Spring through early Fall) using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize in winter.
