The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is the ultimate low-maintenance houseplant, renowned for its resilience and striking, glossy foliage that grows upright from thick rhizomes. It is the perfect choice for beginners, busy professionals, or spaces with less-than-ideal natural light.
Lighting
Low to Bright Indirect Light. It tolerates low-light conditions but will thrive and grow faster with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, intense afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Drought-Tolerant. This plant stores water in its rhizomes, making it highly susceptible to overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out completely (all the way to the bottom of the pot) between waterings. Water sparingly, especially during winter months.
Humidity
Tolerates normal household humidity (40-60%). No supplemental humidity is required.
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix amended with perlite or pumice to ensure aeration and prevent water retention around the sensitive rhizomes. A buffered standard mix is ideal.
Pet Friendly
TOXIC. This plant is toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalates. Keep away from pets and children.
Fertilizer
Feed 1-2 times during the growing season (Spring and Summer) using a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (1/4 to 1/2 strength). Do not fertilize in fall or winter.
